Underwater Museum of Art

The Underwater Museum of Art in Cancun or MUSA is the work of the English sculptor Jason DeCaires Taylor who has deposited in the western end of the Quintana Roo National Park an extraordinary museum that is already recognized as the largest underwater museum in the world.

The reefs in Cancun have received a great tourist influx during years and this has caused some damages to the natural areas and the ecosystem. And the museum is a unique place that takes people away from natural reefs to create an artificial reef where coral is also allowed to grow and marine life can reproduce.

There are excursions where you can visit the underwater statues located next to the Manchones reef area which is located between the coasts of Cancun and Isla Mujeres and is currently home to 455 of the statues.

On the snorkeling tour in the underwater art museum you will be able to appreciate schools of fish, turtles, rays, etc. After the snorkel and depending on the weather you can stop in a second to observe the marine life. El Farito is a famous place to snorkel on the shores of Isla Mujeres. where you will enjoy a 20 minute visit, the perfect way to end the MUSA tour.

The sculptures that you will see in the area include: The Cross of the Bay, Man in Flames, The Collector of Dreams, Bacab, Anthropocene, The Silent Evolution (450 sculptures), A Beetle and The Promise. The environment alters the appearance of the sculptures constantly, since they require algae to provide a base for the fragile corals and food for the fish. Some of the sculptures already show coral growth.

Most of the models were people from Puerto Morelos, including a 5-year-old boy modeled for more than an hour while he was covered with marine cement, other statues were made from a pregnant woman, a nun, a local fisherman, a model and a famous presenter of British television.
