Muyil Ruins

In the archaeological zone of Muyil, you can admire the temples and a natural environment, with exuberant vegetation and the blue of the Caribbean Sea. Located 20 minutes from Tulum and an hour and a half from Cancun.

It is one of the 20 most important archaeological sites for its size and quantity of architectural remains, detected within the Sian Ka’an Biosphere Reserve, in the state of Quintana Roo, and it is very attractive to visit in these vacations of Holy Week.

Muyil, whose name comes from the vocative of one of the two adjacent lagoons (Muyil and Chunyaxché), representing the environmentally best conservative sites of the protected reserve, fact that makes an attractive place for those interested in knowing our history and living together with nature.

The tour of the settlement begins in the area known as the Group of the Entrance, where you can see the first set of constructions such as pyramidal foundations, temples, altars and platforms.

You will explore an interpretative trail, in which you can distinguish the flora and fauna of the area. Zapote Cohechen and ficus, is only part of the flora that houses this jungle.

Cheer up and go through each of the buildings, including El Castillo, the structure of greatest importance and height, for its architecture is believed to be intended to represent the Ceiba, the sacred tree of the Maya; Go into the jungle of the reserve crossing the “sak be” (white road in Mayan language), and finish the journey in the crystal clear waters of the channels. Let yourself be carried away by a relaxing experience.
